What makes a functional music, game or movie room?
Any parent with young children knows that one of the major issues we face in the home is 'the noise'! So for us, when we designed our home, bearing in mind we have musicians (drummers of all things) in the family we needed a place where they could play without disrupting Wayne in his home office. Our solution, to build over the garage.
Adding a room over existing downstairs rooms can be a very inexpensive way of adding space and functionality to your home. Especially if you are looking to build or remodel, don't let those garage eaves go to waste! We also added in extra insulation in the walls between the game room and adjoining bedroom wall. Having the play room at the complete opposite end of the house from the downstairs study and family room also helps when we are entertaining. The adults are able to talk downstairs without being disturbed by the children upstairs. Simple, yet genius.
The movie room was a very functional, simplistic room for us. It is all about the 85 inch screen and the sound system encompassing us. Again everyone has something different that they want out of each and every room of their house. We knew what we needed to make movie night successful and so we added in a snack cupboard and drinks refrigerator. Complete with blackout blinds in case we want to watch something during the day. The movie room again sits over the garage so is away from the rest of the house and doesn't adjoin any rooms, which is just awesome.
