The Full Story
I grew up in a pretty part of England, the beautiful Kent countryside, just outside of London. At school despite my proclivity for Art and Design, I went against my inner instincts and instead chose to study Law at University. Many years have passed since I graduated in 2000. And life has been an adventure, bringing my husband Wayne and I, and our 3 children to finally settle in an entirely different landscape, the countryside just south of Dallas, TX. Where I found myself to be a stay-at-home mom. But the bug was resurfacing.
Despite taking a different path I feel I have circled back, almost unconsciously to my first love, design. Ever since those days as a young child when I would draw house elevations and floor plans, for fun! I have found myself always rearranging rooms everywhere I go, its almost an illness. No matter where I find myself I am re-designing what I see, "changing this, placing that over there, adding color here.. losing that." Even when I was in the hospital room after giving birth to our twins in 2008, I re-arranged the furniture my private room in the hospital to a much more practical layout that took advantage of the view out of the window (we had a prolonged stay as the twins were premature).
The desire to design eventually culminated in something so huge, I'm not one to do things by halfs! And with the help of a very willing and supportive husband I set about drawing and designing a house FOR REAL. Everything from the land, entire elevation and the floor plan, room sizes, windows, cabinets, everything (with inspiration from researched ideas). I started with a goal to build us a practical, functional, beautiful family home. It had to fit us and how we lived and satisfy the bug which had been suppressed all those years.
God is good! He brought about the finding of our land in a most unconventional way and after 2 years of talking about it and planning, researching and budgeting, we bought it! Sold up. And broke ground on our self-build. I had to research everything about building a house, order to do things, permits, inspections, codes, geo-techincal designs, preparations, engineers, sub-contractors, architect, electricians, plumbers, the list goes on.
Then there was the task of finishing the inside. I knew in my imagination how I wanted it to look and feel, but sourcing the tiles, granite, flooring, paint colors, cabinet pulls, all the fixture and fittings, right down to the door hardware required tenacity, research and a knack of negotiating. With a constant eye on my end vision and how it would all come together. That was my driver! I was able to have the liberty to design every cabinet in our home, even the kitchen hood, mudroom, laundry room, pantry, every cabinet is my drawing. Every worktop was hand selected. It was a daunting task, certainly not for everyone and I'm certain I would not have managed it without Waynes assistance. Being a project manager the past 20 years, he stepped in to the role of project managing and risk managing our build. It was meant to be.
And so, Burchcroft Ranch was born in 2020. I am thankful to the Lord for His faithfulness and provision and I have learnt many lessons and tricks along with way and I can't wait to share them with others.
